Handspun Handwover Lama fleece Shoulder Bag

Item Number: 1

This is a large hand spun hand woven shoulder bag. The brown wool was hand spun by Ken from a Corriedale sheep and is the natural brown color of the fleece of the Corriedale. The white wool was hand spun by Ken from the llama shown in the photo on the Sheep Sense page and is the natural white of the llama. This bag is very tactile as the llama creates a smooth and soft fabric.

I have been hand weaving this style bag for over ten years, selling to reenactors. The majority are reenacting explorer types such as mountain men, but many have been for revolutionary war mustered soldier reenactors. At any rate, the style seems to suit the male reenactor well.

15" X 12" with a 44" strap.

Handdyed Handspun Handknit Handspun Shoulderbag with Sterling Silver Clasp

Item Number 2

This bag combines hand knitting and hand weaving using hand spun yarn. The body of the bag was hand knit. The flap was hand woven on a weavette loom. The strap was hand woven on an Ashford inkle loom.

The wool came from two sheep breeds. The brown colored wool is from a Corriedale sheep. It is the natural brown color of the Corriedale fleece. The hand dyed yarn .. using natural dye .. is from Cormo sheep. It was hand dyed by Elizabeth Ferraro, shephardess of AppleRose Farm in New Jersey. The closure is a sterling silver shoe button hook dating to 1850.

Handdyed Handspun Handwoven Scarf

Item Number 4

This long and warm wool scarf was handspun and handwoven from the wool of an Icelandic sheep. Jennifer vanCalCar of vanCalCar Acres in Cooperstown, New York is the shephardess. She handdyed the white fleece the light green. The handspun natural brown fleece from a Corriedale is the brown warp stripe you see in the scarf.

Handdyed Handspun Handwoven Scarf with Ancient African Trade Beads

Item Number 5

This scarf makes use of lots of antique African trade beads. The white fleece was handdyed by Jennifer vanCalCar of vanCalCar Acres to obtain the rich red. Red viscose was added to the handdyed fleece during the carding process. It adds sparkle.

Ken handspun and handwove this scarf on the rigid heddle loom.  The process of adding the beads to the fringe was a very time consuming project.

The fringe of this long scarf carries hundreds of African trade beads dating to the early part of the nineteenth century.

Handdyed Handspun Handwoven Gay Rainbow Wool Scarf

Item Number 6

Attention all gay persons out there.   This is for you.  As a gay man I have been creating gay rainbow bags and scarves for many years.

What better way to show your Gay pride than to wear a  gay Rainbow flag as a winter scarf. A white Corriedale sheep provided the wool for this. Using basic colorways, the white fleece was handdyed to provide the colors of the rainbow flag.

Ken then handwove this scarf on the rigid heddle loom.  It is soft, cozy and a great way to show others your pride in yourself.

Handdyed Handspun Handwoven Russian Inspired Wool Shoulderbag

Item Number 8

This shoulder bag was inspired by a Russian shoulder bag handwoven around 1820. The brown warp was handspun from a natural brown fleeced Corriedale. The red was handspun from a white sheep fleece handdyed cardinal red by Jennifer vanCalCar of vanCalCar Acres.

The pattern on the bag is obtained by using pick up techniques on the rigid heddle loom as Ken handweaves.   He uses a pickup stick, handmade of curly maple by a weaving carpenter, which holds individual warp threads up as he passes the shuttle through the warp threads.

Handdyed Handspun Handwoven fringed shoulderbag

Item Number 9

This is my personal favorite style of shoulder bag. The inspiration came from an early 19th century shoulder bag handwoven in Russia. The natural colored brown fleece was handspun from a Corriedale sheep. The blue was handspun from an Icelandic sheep and was handdyed by Jennifer vanCalCar.

The photograph in the next box shows the detail when the flap is lifted. All the bags that have this handmade fringe over the front also have the same detail of handmade fringe inside, which is a handmade fringe one inch below the opening to the bag. It makes for a rich looking bag.

The strap on many of the bags in this style that I handweave are made by handspinning lengths of the handspun yarn to create the unique looking strap.

This is what all the bags in this style look like when the flap is lifted. The white llama bag is one of this style which has the fringe as well.

Handdyed Handspun Handknit Reticule Bag

Item Number 10

This is a reticule. It was handknit by me. A reticule is a small handbag and these were a popular women's accessory from around 1725 through the end of the Civil War in the USA. I have been handknitting these for well over thirty years for reenactors. However they are handy for many other uses, just use your imagination. They certainly make a statement as a modern day handbag.

The handspun wool is all from AppleRose Farm. The white Cormo sheep fleece was handdyed by Elizabeth to create the carelly transitioned colors.

7" in length with 11" handles. The bag has a 14" opening when pulled at the top.

Gay Rainbow Handspun Handwoven Shoulderbag

Item Number 11

This was one of my favorite projects. A lot of thought and a lot of craftsmanship went into this bag.  It is the only handspun, handwoven bag left from a series of three.

A gay friend wanted to have one of my shoulder bags in the rainbow colors, but muted so he could carry it to work every day and not feel "too" gay rainbow obvious.   So I call it my "sort of out of the closet" gay rainbow shoulder bag.

The natural fleece color of brown was hand spun from a Corriedale sheep. A white Corriedale sheep was handdyed to the rainbow colors by myself. I separated the white fleece into several parts and each part was handdyed separately in  each of the colors of the rainbow. That is how the colors came to be for the Rainbow scarves you can see on this site.

However, to create the varigated look you see on this bag, I took small portions of each color and handspun the varigated yarn that I used as weft in this bag.  It wasn't as easy as this sounds.  Meanwhile, the handspun, handwoven bag proved to be very popular and I am very happy for that.

Be sure to add this subtle gay rainbow handspun, handwoven shoulder bag to your collection.
