A Handspindle Treasury

Author: Spin-Off Magazine

There are lots of photos and there is a lot of information on drop spindles in this book.  You MUST have it if you want to become a spinner.  If you are a spinner you need it for it's history and beautiful photographs.

How to get going, equipment, hand mechanics, the suspended spindle, the support spindle, making your own spindle, spinning around the world, and projects for you to complete is a short list of the topics covered.

Introduction by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts.

This book tells about the many styles of handspindles and how they have been used by people through the ages and around the world. This is also an instruction manual which you can use to teach yourself or others how to spin yarns from many natural fibers.

Comparatively little research has been done on handspindles. A few geographical areas have been studied in some depth, but most have not been touched upon. Much of the information in this book is based on museum collections that are largely random and limited. And most of the available literature has been compiled by archaeologists and ethnographers, whose interest lies in spindles as artifacts.

As a museum professional myself (I was a Costume/Textile Conservator for 39 years..that's me, Ken the SpinnerSmith .. I was privy to many drop spindles and ancient whorls within museum collections.   Unfortunately, they aren't out for viewers, meaning avid handspinners, to see.  This book, though old, shows what is in museum collections.
